Key Elements To Basketball Coaching
There are a number of things that are very important for basketball coaching in order to be a great coach. There are a large number of good basketball coaches at all levels, but there are very few great coaches today. In order to be one of those great coaches, here are a few things that every coach needs to remember:
1 The basketball coach is not there to run the basketball game, direct basketball plays, force the basketball playbook down the players’ throats, and make their lives miserable. The coach is someone who should be a support, a help, a mentor, and someone the basketball players can count on in tough times. Not every player will have the perfect game every time he gets out on the court, and the coach has the responsibility of both motivating and encouraging basketball players, especially the ones that are failing. Coaches run many basketball drills before the game starts, which are designed to ingrain the skills needed by the players in the middle of the game. If the coach did his part to run basketball drills and teach the players their jobs, he should sit back and let them do just that. Only when the team is falling apart should the coach step in to provide a kick in the butt and a pat on the back.
2- Always be prepared for any surprises that the other team might have up their sleeves. You must be alert and ready for any and every situation. The other team may have the same basketball plays as your team and they could be just as good, so you will not necessarily beat them by following the playbook. Before the start of the season, you as the coach should prepare a playbook to prepare the team for whatever surprises the season has. The players should be trained to be prepared for any surprises so that they will be ready for the season and be ready to face whatever the opposition has planned.
3 The coach should focus on perfection at all times, while still allowing for human error. There is no player that will sink the same shot 100 times out of 100 shots, and the coach needs to realize this fact. Even the best players have off games or even off seasons, and coaches need to take that into account. Practice is when the coach should always focus on the perfect plays, passes, dribbles, rebounds, and games. During the game, the goal of the coach is to encourage his players to play to the limits of their talent and do their best.
4- You need to learn to work around the players’ different strengths and weaknesses. Making the players’ strengths and weaknesses balance out between each other is what the great coaches do, and by doing that it makes them just strengths. The poor coaches take the weaknesses of a player and try to train it out of them, but the great coaches exploit them so that the team is more well-rounded.
