Yoga Retreats by Bryant Ford

Ask an RV enthusiast what’s the most rewarding aspect of life on the road and they’re likely to mention the camaraderie felt among the fellow RVers found at RV parks and campgrounds USA-wide. This camaraderie comes naturally from sharing experiences and ideas with kindred spirits but it’s also a very vital component in membership with the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA).

The FMCA is an international organization that promotes the recreational use of motorhomes. A motorhome is any vehicle that is self-propelled and has interior accommodations similar to those found in the typical home.

Founded in 1963 in Hinckley, Maine, to promote their common interest, the 26 founding families have grown to more than 390,000 family memberships since then. International headquarters are now in Cincinnati, Ohio, but the organization’s birthplace is commemorated by a monument, dedicated on July 4, 1994, at the Good Will-Hinckley School in Hinckley, Maine, where the founding families once met.

The organization’s code of ethics requires compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and calls on each member to be good neighbors, careful and responsible coach owners and operators, and good citizens of the FMCA community. The FMCA membership emblem readily identifies every member’s motor home, making it very simple to identify fellow members.

Once identified, members seem to delight in sharing their experiences – which important amenities are offered at which truck stops along the way, which Walmart locations allow boondocking, RV parks where camping is a joy and campgrounds best avoided. It’s not unusual to find FMCA members sharing recipes, family photos, drinks at sunset, BBQ or a movie on Saturday, and church on Sunday.

It’s not unusual to find, when comparing notes at many of the US campgrounds, Canada is represented in FMCA membership, too, as are Mexico, Great Britain, and other nations. The FMCA is truly an international fellowship of people who love life from the front seat of an RV.
